MORE CHILL-OUT OPTIONS WITH NEW LEXUS ADVANCED ICE PACKAGE

Lexus raises in-car entertainment to a new level with the introduction of an advanced new premium ICE package for the RX luxury SUV. It delivers better quality, improved performance and even greater versatility, but at no extra cost compared to the current system.

The new premium ICE comprises two slim tablet units, securely mounted on the back of the front seats. Each features an eight-inch WVGA screen with an integrated side loading DVD player and USB 2.0 and SD Card readers. The units are resistant to screen jitter when travelling over uneven surfaces and their larger screen size gives a wider viewing angle.

Two pairs of infrared headphones are provided, which are about 20 per cent smaller than before, making them easier for children to use. They are now foldable for easy storage. Reception has been sharpened and there is an auto power-off function. Each tablet has a manual control panel, or a remote control unit can be used, redesigned for a superior tactile quality and ease of use.

The tablets have RCA inputs for connecting compatible games consoles and a stereo 23.5mm jack point. The screens can be operated together or independently, should passengers choose to enjoy the same playback or their own choice of video, music or gaming.

The system is compatible with Region 2 DVD, CD, USB 2.0 and SD Card media. Compatible formats are DVD playback 4.3 and 1.69, MPEG2, MPEG 4, DivX, MP3 CD, MP3 DVD, photo CD JPEG, DVD video, Video CD (VCD) and Super Video CD (SVCD).

The premium ICE package, available to order now, is provided as standard on SE-L versions of the RX 350 and RX 400h. It is offered as an option on all other grades, priced £2,200.

NEW LEXUS HYBRID DRIVERS SAVE £17 PER DAY ON REVISED LONDON CONGESTION CHARGE

Revisions to the London Congestion Charge announced on 12 February 2008 mean buyers of new Lexus hybrid models driving into the city will save £17 per day compared to those driving many similar saloons and SUVs from other brands.

From 27 October, new Lexus hybrid drivers will be required to pay the £8 daily charge. Existing owners will continue to have a complete exemption, so long as their car remains in the same ownership, until January 2010.

The three Lexus Hybrid Drive models: the RX 400h SUV, the GS 450h performance saloon and the LS 600h limousine, all produce CO2 emissions below the 225g/km cut-off level for VED (car tax) Band G. Under the new charging system, cars in Band G will have to pay £25 per day – potentially more than £6,000 over a full year.

The exemption for less polluting cars is recognition of the lower emissions and fuel consumption benefits of Lexus Hybrid Drive. Owners also appreciate the unrivalled refinement and quietness offered by hybrid power Lexus models, and the surprisingly smooth acceleration provided by the powerful electric motors that supplement the highly efficient petrol engine.

Lexus LS 600h

Lexus LS 600h

The 2008 LS 600h is a 4-door, up to 5-passenger luxury sedan, available in one trim only, the L Luxury Sedan.

'The LS 600h L was developed to explore the outer reaches of performance, style and safety,' said Bob Carter, Lexus Division group vice president and general manager. 'It is a vehicle as efficient and familiar as it is indulgent and advanced, a far-reaching concept, fully developed and fully realized. It is simply in a class by itself.'

The all-new LS 600h L is powered by the ultra-quiet Lexus Hybrid Drive system, the automotive industry's most advanced gas-electric hybrid system developed to date that features the world's first full V8, all-wheel-drive (AWD) hybrid drivetrain. The system combines a new 5.0-liter V8 gasoline engine with two powerful electric motors and a newly designed large-capacity battery pack that is lighter and extremely quiet. Together, this advanced combination provides the LS 600h L with an unmatched balance of environmental efficiency and performance.

The LS 600h L's Lexus Hybrid Drive system provides power and performance on par with competitors normally aspirated 12-cylinder powerplants. The hybrid powertrain generates a peak combined output rating of 438 horsepower and can effortlessly accelerate the LS 600h L from zero-to-60 mph in just 5.5 seconds. Mid-range acceleration is even more impressive. The system's electric motor is capable of delivering maximum torque, on demand, and is most beneficial during passing maneuvers.

Finally, exhilarating torque is in abundance at higher speeds as the LS 600h L rapidly accelerates from 50-70 mph in a rapid 3.5 seconds.

The LS hybrid is expected to carry a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) rating. A SULEV rating means the LS 600h L has nearly 70-percent cleaner emissions than the 'cleanest' of its competitors.

Owing to the inherent noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) improvements offered by its hybrid powertrain, the LS 600h L is designed to set a new standard for silent running in the prestige-luxury sedan class. The depth and density of cabin quietness in the LS 600h L required extensive re-engineering of accessory motors and switches.

The LS hybrid carries a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) rating. A SULEV rating means the LS 600h L has nearly 70 percent fewer smog forming emissions than vehicles with a conventional internal combustion engine and cleaner than the ambient air in some major cities.
The company also paid extraordinary attention to safety in the 600, adding advanced precollision with brake activation to the extensive array of safety mechanisms. This system detects objects, determines the likelihood of a collision, and then applies the brakes up to 40 percent of maximum force without any action by the driver.

Along with frugality, a SULEV emissions rating, and the massive elastic surge of acceleration, the 2008 LS600hL proclaims its unique status with blue-tinted badges and that proud (and long) trunklid insignia. Will that be enough to justify the price premium? We — and Lexus — are betting it will.

2007 Lexus GS 450h

2007 Lexus GS 450h

The much-anticipated 2007 GS 450h delivers electrifying power and all the style and luxury of the acclaimed GS lineup. Achieving an unparalleled balance of high performance and high efficiency, the GS 450h produces well over 300 horsepower, under 6-second 0-100 acceleration, remarkable fuel efficiency and super ultra low emissions.

The rear-wheel drive GS 450h is driven by a new Lexus Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain that couples a high-output 3.5-litre V6 engine with a high-torque electric motor. Together they generate power that rivals a 4.5-litre V8 gasoline engine - without compromising our environment.

A completely new Lexus Hybrid powertrain was created to power the new 450h. The system combines a 3.5-liter V6 engine with a high-output, permanent magnet electric motor—all driving the rear wheels. Combined power output will be well in excess of 300 horsepower, with zero-to-60 acceleration in less than six seconds.

Even more impressive is how quickly and powerfully torque is delivered during mid-range acceleration. The system's massive electric motor is capable of delivering maximum torque, immediately upon demand. This unique power delivery characteristic is most noticeable...and most useful...during 30-to-50 passing and merging maneuvers. It is an experience that must be felt to be fully appreciated.

The result is a level of acceleration performance similar to a V-8 engine, with combined fuel economy in the high twenties, a level more typical of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder compact sedan, along with one of the best EPA emissions ratings in the industry.

Based closely on the new GS luxury sport sedans, the GS 450h is designed to be the premium model in the GS series, with all of the performance, luxury and safety features befitting a flagship. Many of the optional features from the GS 300 and 430 will be standard on the GS 450h.

There are subtle visual differences like special 18-inch light-alloy wheels and a new power meter that replaces the tachometer. But the new GS 450h is designed to operate like any other Lexus vehicle such that the hybrid experience feels completely normal and seamless, all while delivering a surprising new level of performance and efficiency.

Lexus SC430 Pebble Beach Edition

Lexus SC430 Pebble Beach Edition

In celebration of its exclusive partnership with the Pebble Beach Company, Lexus will introduce the fourth annual Lexus SC Pebble Beach Edition retractable hardtop convertible at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance Lexus Fashion Preview on Aug. 18.

Evoking a color combination reminiscent of history's classic convertibles, the 2007 SC Pebble Beach Edition features a cream pearlescent exterior paint call ed Starfire Pearl, with a passionate Pimento Red leather interior and black birds-eye maple wood trim. With only 400 slated for production, this new Pebble Beach Edition SC will be in limited supply.

While sharing the unique styling cues and refined interior trim found in all Lexus models, the new Pebble Beach SC includes special-edition brushed-chrome badging on the front fenders and center console; a Pimento red Pebble Beach logo is embroidered on black carpeted floor mats to complement the interior. The hardtop convertible also features aggressive 18-inch G-Spider alloy wheels, a sleek rear spoiler, and either run-flat summer or run-flat all-season tires.

Since its debut as the first retractable hardtop in the premium luxury segment, one of the SC 430's most notable features has been its ability to stow the roof within the confines of its trunk in a meager 25 seconds, while still maintaining enough room for luggage. This is accomplished without latches, catches, snaps or covers. When the top is up, it defies traditional convertible logic by remaining solid, secure and weatherproof.

Beneath its striking exterior, the rear-wheel-drive SC 430 is propelled by a 288-horsepower, DOHC, 4.3-liter V8 engine with Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), while still achieving 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway and ULEV II emissions certification. The powerful V8 is mated to a six-speed sequential-shift ECT-i transmission to attain a 0-60 time of 5.8 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 149 mph.

A number of new features are present on all 2007 SC 430s, including driver and front passenger knee airbags, which complement the standard dual front airbags and front-seat-mounted side airbags. The knee airbags are in addition to a new front-passenger occupant-detection sensor and a fully concealed uniblade front windshield wiper.

Daytime running lights, fog lamps and projector High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights are among the illumination features highlighted by Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) headlights, which help better illuminate a turn as the driver steers into it. The SC 430 also includes an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, traction control (TRAC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC).

For a truly extraordinary auditory experience, Lexus has partnered with Mark Levinsonâ – designers of the ultimate in custom home audio systems – to create a sound system available exclusively in Lexus vehicles. The SC 430 contains a Mark Levinson® Premium Sound System with a seven-channel DSP 240-watt amplifier, nine strategically placed speakers and a six-disc in-dash CD changer.

An Automatic Sound Levelizer (ASL) system automatically adjusts when the top is lowered to compensate for the change in acoustics and ambient noise levels and returns to its original levels when the top is raised. This lends to a sound quality that truly mimics a live performance. The sound system is integrated with a DVD-based Lexus Navigation System with voice command that allows hands-free use.

Lexus established itself with the LS400, and the current version, the LS430, continues to be its iconic car. No other Lexus delivers more convincingly on the marqueВ’s promise, "the passionate pursuit of perfection." And the particular field of automotive perfection that Lexus has pursued more successfully than any other is that of the luxury sedan.

Quite simply, the LS430 nails the luxury-sedan formula in all the key areas. It's so quiet it could be in deep space, so smooth-riding it could be levitating. The controls move with an expensive fluidity. The cabin is stretch-out spacious, and its materials are of the finest quality. The 290-horsepower V-8 engine is so smooth that it seems to have no moving parts, yet it moves the LS430 with alacrity, sending it from 0 to 60 mph quicker than a Mercedes-Benz S430. Then there's the human factor: In a world full of hassles, dealing with your Lexus dealer usually is not one of them.

Naysayers will claim that the LS430's driving experience amounts to bland perfection and that its appearance lacks personality. But understand that the LS430's silent fulfillment of its mission is a luxury itself. Like the ideal concierge or butler, the LS430 serves utterly unobtrusively. In some sense, this is an old-fashioned philosophy of luxury, and some people will consider it a failing. It's true that when compared with more expensive luxury sedans, the big Lexus doesn't make as loud a statement about its owner. But for those secure enough to spend less, there isn't a better luxury car out there.
